Instructor Spotlight! Kirsten Kupras

Kirsten Kupras, fondly know to us as ‘Koop,’ is truly one of a kind! Koop lives in Portland with her best friend and canine roomie, Dozer! He occasionally drops in on our classes to say hello!

From physical therapy to yoga, trail running, hiking, indoor cycling, and more- Koop has a hold on ideal healthy living! Let’s hear what she has in store for us!

“Spring has Sprung!  Spring is when the thawing of the earth begins to allow for a new, energized life all around us.  Let’s move through the last of the winter sluggishness and create space for new sensations as we awaken our bodies.

For Monday’s class we will be bringing awareness to these elements: the breath, the mind-body connection, and how the sensation of exploring your limits will translate to other areas of your life.  Just as the earth is being awakened back up with the warmth and heat of the sun, we will explore this same concept in our bodies.  Building heat and energy with our breath and with moving our bodies.

Get ready for some pranayama (breathwork) as well as some familiar asana flows to challenge the mind, body, and balance!  See you on the mat!”

Thank you Koop for your dedication, your knowledge, and your positive energy. AgeProof just would not be the same without you!

Food for Thought… and Movement!

It is pretty clear that diet has a great effect on our overall health. Not just our cholesterol levels or our body weight, but even our joint comfort and ability to move well!

First, let’s compare diet types: Prudent vs. Western.

A Prudent diet consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, and low-fat dairy products.

A Western diet consists of processed foods, saturated fats, refined grains, and low fiber. Fruits and vegetables are consumed at a lower rate, while red meat and other processed meats are often higher on the menu!

In a study looking into how diet can affect the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis (OA), following a Western diet was associated with increased risk of knee OA, whereas following a Prudent pattern was associated with a reduced risk of knee OA (Dietary Patterns and Risk of Developing Knee Osteoarthritis: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, 2021).

Simply put, this study found that a diet higher in fiber and lower in processed foods resulted in less risk of knee osteoarthritis. So don’t forget to hit the produce aisle next time you go grocery shopping!
