Event Highlights:
- 0:16 – 3:45 – Dr. Ken Zweig begins the town hall event with a few housekeeping items, and introduces his guests, Dr. Fred Gilbert, PT, DPT, and Dr. Dan Alcorn, DPT.
- 3:53 – 5:36 – Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Alcorn thank Dr. Zweig for having them as guests, and then provide attendees with a brief overview of MovementX.
- 5:45 – 8:23 – What is chronic pain? Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Alcorn provide their definition of chronic pain, as well as touch on the multiple topics they will be discussing during the presentation.
- 9:08 – 11:52 – “What they found was the number one reason that people chose that surgery was not symptoms. It was not history. It was not presentation of pain. It was simply the zip code that somebody lived in and whether the doctor would prescribe it, or the surgeon would prescribe it or not.”
- 12:00 – 21:16 – Dr. Alcorn presents two myths about the medical community and the overreliance of biomedical education. He also gives Jessica Ware, PA-C, a shoutout for her holistic, proactive, and direct approach with depression screening.
- 21:55 – 25:35 – “And so one of the things that honestly, that we hope comes out of this is that you can start to believe that you can get better from the condition that you have. And there’s a lot of evidence starting to emerge around the belief systems and how those directly impact it.”
- 26:07 – 28:01 – Dr. Alcorn and Dr. Gilbert introduce SNAP – an acronym standing for sleep, nutrition, activity, and psychological wellness.
- 28:49 – 36:13 – Dr. Alcorn talks about sleep and how poor sleep hygiene has a direct correlation to chronic pain. Prioritizing sleep is essential to managing chronic pain!
- 36:30 – 40:34 – “So added sugar, meaning obviously granulated sugar, but also, the cakes, the bagels, the simple sugars, and that’s not a vote for don’t eat. It’s a vote for pay attention to what it does to your body.”
- 40:39 – 49:40 – Have you ever heard about the “20/20” principle? Dr. Alcorn discusses helpful tips related to activity. “And I don’t get too into the specifics of that movement. I just want them to move lightly and easily. I don’t want them to shock or overwhelm the body, but I want it to be specific. I want it to be targeted.”
- 50:27 – 54:22 – “If you can go for a 10-minute walk today and a 12-minute walk tomorrow, even if the pain’s the same that’s progress. Finding medical practitioners that can help guide you through that process is important.”
- 55:27 – 1:07:31 – Dr. Zweig thanks Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Alcorn for their time and closes out the town hall event.
