Kneeling After Joint Replacement – Yes, You Can!

Knees are an essential part of mobility and movement. Many have had a total knee replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty (TKA.) Post-TKA requires a lot of rehabilitation, and can generally have mixed messages and/or beliefs surrounding kneeling. Well, let’s explore!

What they’re saying: In research from Wylde et al. (2019), 50-80% that report problems after TKA with kneeling. However, 63% of people post TKA needed to kneel for day-to-day tasks in the last month.

Kneeling is absolutely pivotal for activities of daily life!

Yes, but: Fear is a major barrier to kneeling. “Reasons for this are multifactorial, including knee pain/discomfort, numbness, fear of harming the prosthesis, co-morbidities and recommendations from health professionals” (Wylde et al., 2019).

Our thought bubble: “There is currently no evidence that there is any clinical reason why patients should not kneel on their replaced knee, and reason for not kneeling could be addressed through education and rehabilitation” (Wilde et al., 2019).

The bottom line: Individuals post-TKA are often electing not to kneel, even when there is no evidence as to why they should not! With additional education and rehabilitation, fear surrounding kneeling can be alleviated. Kneeling is a choice, not a contraindication!

Are you post-TKA but concerned about your joint replacement? Maybe you’re ready to try kneeling but want some guidance?
